Blog : Our Top 10 Favorite Things to Do in the Gers
It all begins with an idea.
After living here for several years and welcoming guests from all over the world, we've discovered the most beautiful corners of this enchanting region. The Gers is still one of France's best-kept secrets - peaceful, authentic, and utterly charming. Here are 10 of our personal favorites that we love sharing with our guests.
1. Wander Through Larressingle - France's Smallest Fortified Village
Just 20 minutes from La Grande Maurague, this tiny medieval gem, aka ‘La Petite Carcassone’ is an absolute must-see. Walking through the ancient stone gateway feels like stepping back in time. We love visiting early in the morning when the light is golden and the village is still quiet. Don't miss the small museum and the incredibly well-preserved fortifications.
Our tip: Park just outside the walls and take your time exploring. There's a lovely little café where you can enjoy a coffee on the terrace with views of the surrounding countryside. Also outside the walls there is a little restaurant l’Estanquet, with a nice terrace under the trees.
2. Explore the Historic Streets of Condom
Our nearest town, Condom, is a beautiful bastide with stunning architecture and a wonderfully authentic French atmosphere. The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre dominates the skyline, and the old town is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Visit the Cloitre, the statue of the Three Musketeers and Dartagnan,…Wednesday and Saturday mornings bring the weekly market - an explosion of colors, scents, and local flavors.
Our tip: Visit the Tourist Office in front of the Cathedral, they are happy to help with information or a guide, and go for a walk in the parc de Gauge. The views over the Baïse river are lovely.
3. Visit Fourcès - One of France's Most Beautiful Villages
This perfectly circular bastide is about 20 minutes away and is absolutely enchanting. The central square, surrounded by arcaded houses, hosts a wonderful flower market in late April. Even outside festival time, Fourcès is magical - especially in autumn when the plane trees turn golden. Once a month on sundays there is a ‘Marché des Brocanteurs’.
Our tip: Go for an Armagnac tasting at Maison Ladevèze!! Its our favourite experience. Have lunch at one of the restaurants under the arcades and soak in the atmosphere. If you're lucky enough to visit during the flower market weekend in april, book well in advance!
4. Discover Montréal-du-Gers and its Breathtaking Views
This hilltop village offers some of the most spectacular views in the Gers. The fortified Gothic church is impressive, and wandering the narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses is a joy. On a clear day, you can see the Pyrénées mountains from the viewing platform.
Our tip: Visit around sunset for truly magical light. Bring your camera - you'll want to capture these views!
5. Tour a Local Armagnac Distillery
The Gers is the heart of Armagnac country, and visiting a working distillery is fascinating. Many domaines offer tours and tastings where you can learn about this ancient craft and sample different vintages. We're happy to recommend our favorite producers and can often arrange private visits for our guests.
Our tip: Don't just taste the Armagnac - many estates also produce excellent wines (especially Côtes de Gascogne whites) and Floc de Gascogne, a delicious aperitif.
6. La Romieu – Medieval Charm and Les Jardins de Coursiana – A Paradise for Garden Lovers
Just 15 minutes from Condom, Gers, the village of La Romieu is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. Wander through its cobbled streets and marvel at the Collegiale Saint-Pierre, a stunning Romanesque church listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village square, with its old arcades and cozy cafés, exudes timeless medieval charm.
For a green retreat, head to Les Jardins de Coursiana, located outside the village center of La Romieu. These botanical gardens are divided into thematic areas, ranging from historical vegetable gardens to vibrant flower beds and exotic plants. Whether you are seeking inspiration, a leisurely walk, or a serene spot for a picnic, Les Jardins de Coursiana is a true haven for nature lovers and garden enthusiasts alike.
Our tip: Mondaymorning there is a little farmers market in the village. Go for a lunch at On va vers le beau, just outside the village walls.
7. Taste Your Way Through Local Markets
Every village and town in the Gers has its weekly market, and they're all wonderful. Beyond Condom's Wednesday and Saturday markets, we love Lectoure's Friday market and Eauze's Thursday market. We also like, Nérac’s market on saterday mornings. You'll find everything from fresh produce to artisan cheeses, local honey, and handmade crafts. It's where real Gascon life happens.
Our tip: Arrive early for the best selection, and don't be shy about tasting before you buy. A smile and a "bonjour" go a long way!
8. Hike or Cycle Through Sunflower Fields
In July and August, the Gers transforms into a sea of golden sunflowers. The gently rolling landscape is perfect for cycling or leisurely walks. We can suggest several beautiful routes right from La Grande Maurague, ranging from easy strolls to longer bike rides through the countryside.
Our tip: Early morning or late afternoon offers the most beautiful light for photos. The sunflowers face east, so morning light hits them head-on. Magical!
9. Discover art in the Flaran Abbey
In Valence-sur-Baïse, the Abbey of Flaran is a medieval monument with a turbulent history. Its architecture is a remarkable example of Cistercian art. Witness to the 100 Years War, sold to the Revolution, undergoing multiple transformations over the centuries, it has a long past to tell you about. Since the 2000s, its old stones have served as a setting for an artistic centre. You will see a permanent collection with various works, from a gift from the illustrious collector: Simonow. At its feet, spreads a magnificent garden, on the banks of the Baïse, ideal for relaxation and walking.
Our tip: ask for our favourite restaurants
10. Simply Relax and Embrace "La Vie Gasconne"
But hey, perhaps the best thing to do in the Gers is... nothing at all. This region invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and rediscover simple pleasures. Enjoy long lunches that stretch into the afternoon. Watch the sunset with a glass of local wine. Listen to the cicadas on a warm evening. This is the art of living well, Gascon-style.
Our tip: ambrace slowliving! Build plenty of downtime into your itinerary. Some of our happiest guests are those who spend entire afternoons by our pool with a good book, soaking in the peace and beauty of the Gers. We have nice local drinks and the best Côte de Gascogne wines in our honestybar!
